#OnThisDay in 1865 Frederick Douglass was elected President of Freedman Bank and Trust. Freedman's Bank was established by President Lincoln in 1865, as part of the Freedman's Bureau, to help formerly enslaved people navigate their financial lives.
The Freedman's Bureau and Bank and Trust are just some of the reconciliation projects taken up during Reconstruction that were undermined by the U.S. government soon after.
